As you probably know, when I’m not at the clinic, I most likely climb mountains in some parts of the world. My patients and clients often ask me how I prepare for these adventures, so I would like to share a nutrition part of the preparation with you. 

As an avid international high-altitude trekker, I have embarked on exhilarating adventures that have tested my mental and physical limits and filled my soul with joy. Over the years, I have discovered nutrition’s impact on my performance and overall experience during these challenging expeditions.

As an international trekker, I appreciate the intricate balance between the foods you eat and the demands of these expeditions. After all, you got to know your body to pick the right foods in foreign countries.  

In preparation, I often utilize micronutrient testing (and I offer it at my clinic) to gain insights into my body’s specific nutritional needs, allowing me to tailor my nutrition plan precisely. By analyzing the results, I can ensure that I optimize my micronutrient intake, providing the necessary fuel and support for peak performance throughout my challenging adventures. If I climb internationally, after returning, I do a GI test to ensure my microbiome is not impacted by anything I accidentally ingested.

Proper nutrition becomes even more critical at high altitudes, where oxygen is scarce, and challenges abound. I have learned to prioritize nutrient-rich foods that nourish my body and sustain my energy levels throughout the trek. I have experienced the physical toll these expeditions can take on my muscles and overall recovery. Protein has become my companion in helping muscle repair and promoting resilience. I incorporate lean protein sources into my meals, ensuring my body has the building blocks to recover and adapt.

Hydration and Electrolytes 

Proper hydration becomes a lifeline for physical and mental well-being in high-altitude regions. I have learned firsthand the importance of staying hydrated. I carry two large water bottles and individual packets of electrolytes and drink consistently throughout the day. Hydrating fuels my body and keeps me in tune with the incredible environment.

Enhancing Energy and Vitality

The energy I bring to my pursuits is a critical determinant of success. I can sustain steady energy levels throughout the day by fueling my body with the right macronutrients, such as proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates.
