The most common question I get is “what is functional medicine” followed by “what do you mean I can do my hormone testing at home.”

Let me answer both briefly and precisely. Both questions also have long answers, but here I’ll be brief so you can immediately see a benefit from this kind of testing.

Functional medicine is a frontier of modern scientific biochemical western medicine. It is the best you can get to precisely identify the biochemical imbalances in your body that cause your symptoms. Based on these results, I create a treatment plan to get your body to get to balance and, as a result, eliminate your symptoms. In other words, we get to the root of the problem to resolve it. It gets better every day, and it is evolving every day.

To provide functional medicine, I must constantly learn from its leading sources. A very small percentage of doctors do that due to the high investment of time and resources, so the likelihood of your primary care providing quality functional medicine is very minimal.

The testing is done through the blood, urine, stool, and saliva, depending on what we are testing you for. The reason for that variety is that blood tests will be inaccurate for various health conditions because the blood concentration of elements differs from your tissue concentration. Some examples of that specialized testing would be hormones, nutrigenomics, gut microbiome, mold, toxic metals, neurotransmitters, and so on.

So the shortest answer is that functional medicine provides you with the most accurate and practical answers available at the moment. It is also available through telemedicine/telehealth.

Hormone testing at home and other functional medicine testing at home are very convenient, and sometimes the only possible way to do it. In the case of hormones, melatonin, and adrenal function, the samples must be collected a few times throughout the day to give you an accurate picture of what is going on in your body. Hormones are not static, they change depending on the time of the day, and proper testing takes it into consideration.

To do this testing at home I either give you the test kit after the consultation at my clinic or via telehealth, order the lab to ship it to your address if we work remotely. In either case, I determine what kind of testing you will benefit from the most based on your symptoms and my initial evaluation of your health.

Even in the world of hormone testing, there are multiple tests to choose from, and given that they are not cheap, it is important to choose the right one for your particular case. I often have a new patient bringing me results of multiple functional medicine tests clearly showing problems to correct, without any correction plans. Or the functional medicine tests are chosen incorrectly based on the patient’s symptoms. I’m choosing to test for my patients very carefully and in order of importance.

This is what happens after you receive your test kit. After you collect your test sample (according to very well-described instructions inside the kit), you mail these samples to the lab inside an included and prepaid envelope. The lab processes the sample within a necessary timeframe and sends me a notification that your results are ready to review. I create a treatment plan to correct the imbalances test revealed and set up a phone consultation with you to go over the result.

Depending on your symptoms and test results, the treatment plan can be simple or complex. We always discuss it before moving forward.

If you like that approach to your health, please schedule your phone consultation with me, and I can answer your questions before making an initial appointment.
